David Hockney is perhaps the most widely celebrated British artist of recent decades. A graduate of the Royal College of Art, he achieved international acclaim while still a student, and in the last three decades his popularity and reputation have grown immeasurably. Numerous exhibitions around the globe have increased Hockney's renown, but although his paintings and prints have received enormous attention, his drawings have seldom been exhibited on their own. Published to accompany the first retrospective of Hockney drawings in fifteen years, this long overdue monograph focuses on this lesser known but vital aspect of the artist's oeuvre.
Bringing together an exciting selection of Hockney's work on paper and in sketchbooks, this important book contains many drawings that have never been reproduced before - including several from the artist's personal collection. Spanning his entire career, from 1954 to the present, these images show how drawing lies at the very heart of all Hockney's work, a fundamental aspect of his graphic approach to every medium. Amongst the 145 works reproduced in colour are portraits, landscapes, still lifes, images of California and the many other places Hockney has visited, together with subjects which reveal more personal aspects of the artist's life. Some of these will be familiar, such as his portraits of Celia Birtwell and Henry Geldzahler, while others have rarely been seen, in either books or galleries.
