A collection of 11 articles written by scholars of international repute on the history of China during the long war against Japan from 1937 to 1945. Topics addressed include political, economic, social, and diplomatic issues related to wartime China, based on materials newly opened for research. Offers strong evidence that the Sino-Japanese War was of a complexity and magnitude that must be understood in terms that go beyond its military dimensions. Barrett teaches history at McMaster University, Canada. Shyu is affiliated with the University of New Brunswick, Canada. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
