Dr. Chuanan Shen, a renowned expert in burns, now serves as the director, chief surgeon, professor, and doctoral supervisor at the Department of Burns and Plastic Surgery in the Fourth Medical Center of Chinese PLA General Hospital. In 2007, he studied at Harvard Medical School as a post-doctoral fellow. Over the past two decades, Dr. Shen has led the treatment of roughly 1,200 extensive burn patients. Among these are more than 50 patients with burns exceeding 90% TBSA, including extreme cases of 100% TBSA burns (95% third-degree) and 99.5% TBSA burns (99% third-degree). In clinical practice, he has developed a series of novel strategies for critical burn care, ranging from fluid resuscitation, wound repair, autologous skin cultivation, surgical procedures of extensive escharotomy and tangential excision, and hemostasis, to reconstructive surgery.
Prof. Shens interest is mainly in critical burn care, and over the years his research has been funded by 15 grants at national or provincial levels. Based on his innovative research, he has published 150 papers in prestigious journals in this field, including Advanced Science, Biomaterials, Bioactive Materials, International Journal of Surgery, Surgery, Shock, Trauma, and Burns. Dr. Shen has authored six books, including Novel Strategies for Critical Burn Care in Chinese and Series of Burns, including nine volumes of Refractory Wound Repair, Pediatric Burns, Electrical Burns, etc., a first-of-its-kind visual publication backed by a national publishing fund in China. In addition, Prof. Shen is the President-elect of the Chinese Burn Association (CBA), President of the Committee on Burns of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association (CMDA), President of the Beijing Burn Association, and an editorial member of the Journal of Burn Care and Research, the official publication of the American Burn Association.
