Here 15 articles originally published in journals and collections ranging from the 1930s to the 1990s explore the gradual shift from iron to steel in civil and structural engineering beginning about the middle of the 19th century, usually considered inaugurated by the construction of the Crystal Palace in 1850-51. They do not discuss the processes of iron and steel manufactures, but focus instead on the use of cast and wrought iron in building construction immediately after 1850; bridge construction during the transition; and framed building structures, especially tall buildings where steel came into its own in the late 1880s.
