Presents an overview of early Christian and medieval mosaic work in Italy, covering the artists and their patrons in the context of their cultural and political history.

Italian Mosaics: 300 1300 is the first comprehensive and well-researched overview of the many stunning examples of the art that still survive. It is lavishly illustrated with superb color plates, the majority of them new, specially commissioned photographs.

This volume focuses on Early Christian and medieval mosaics in Italy. Each of the nineteen chapters is concise and authoritative, offering a descriptive and interpretive essay on all aspects of mosaics covering the artists and their patrons in the context of their cultural and political history. Most essays conclude with a diagram of the site, followed by a series of full- and double-page color plates showing the entire cycle.

While this volume is the predecessor to the Italian Frescoes series, it also stands alone as a masterpiece of art and scholarship, which will be welcomed by art lovers and art historians alike.

Arvustused

Praise for Joachim Poeschke's Italian Frescoes: The Age of Giotto: "This is the fourth installment in Abbeville's authoritative series on Italian fresco painting...Twenty-two fresco cycles are presented in superb color photographs." --Chicago Tribune "A luscious oversized book with incredible detail and depth on the topic, this is great for armchair scholars who would otherwise wear out numerous pairs of shoes if they tried to visit and study all of these incredible frescoes in person...The reproduction quality of the images is superb." --Antiques "& The Arts Weekly "This is an unsurpassed accomplishment combining extraordinary photographs with an authoritative text and extensive bibliography." --Museum Store Magazine Praise for the Italian Frescoes series: "One of the finest set of artbooks that one might wish for... Gorgeous. *****" --Art Times "Detailed plans and descriptions set the projects before us as never before, bringing home masterpieces that in some cases can only be seen with difficulty in out-of-the-way places. The second volume is eagerly awaited." --Chicago Tribune "...lucid text and an abundance of magnificent color photographs... The close-up views of famous and lesser-known sites... are almost as good as traveling to Italy." --Philadelphia Inquirer "Perfectly illustrated and designed to give absolute clarity to a text that is a model of concision. This is the model of how all art books ought to be." --The World of Interiors
