This book provides a compelling insiders account of The North American Waterfowl Management Plan (NAWMP), a groundbreaking initiative that has transformed avian conservation across the continent.

In the early 1980s, waterfowl conservation faced a dire crisis. By the mid-1980s, a bold and visionary idea took shape, culminating in the creation of the NAWMP. Now approaching its 40th anniversary, this extraordinary endeavour has conserved millions of habitat acres, mobilised billions of dollars in funding, and united thousands of partners from Latin America to the Arctic. Drawing on his experience as a founding member of the NAWMP science community, the author provides unparalleled insights into this remarkable conservation journey, honouring the visionaries who paved the way. Through a detailed exploration of NAWMPs origins, growth, achievements, and challenges, this book highlights the Plans enduring legacy and its relevance to todays conservation efforts. It offers valuable lessons for those striving to replicate its success in protecting other migratory species. At a time of escalating ecological crises, NAWMP stands as a testament to what can be achieved when diverse stakeholders come together with determination and shared purpose. This book not only celebrates NAWMPs transformative impact but also inspires a new generation of large-scale, cooperative conservation initiatives.

This book is essential reading for conservation professionals, policymakers, natural resource students, and anyone passionate about protecting nature.

Arvustused

Anderson's meticulous research has documented the development of a preeminent model of wildlife management that demonstrates how science and partnerships can have positive impact on a continental scale. This is a "must-read" resource for anyone in conservation.

Paul Schmidt, Retired Co-chair of NAWMP, Assistant Director, USFWS, and Chief Conservation Officer, Ducks Unlimited, Inc.

The North American Waterfowl Management Plan is one of the greatest conservation success stories of our time. By documenting the evolution of the Plan, Anderson not only preserves its legacy, but also provides a potential roadmap to success for other fledging conservation initiatives.

James Ringelman, Ph.D., Ducks Unlimited (retired)

Drawing on years of research and management experiences, Andersons historical treatise provides deep insights into the development and evolution of the North American Waterfowl Management Plan. Andersons thorough yet accessible narrative unveils critical steps that guided one of the worlds most successful wetland-wildlife conservation programs.

Robert Clark, PhD, Environment and Climate Change Canada

The North American Waterfowl Management Plan is a carefully crafted chronicle of arguably the most successful public-private, international conservation program ever undertaken. Its evolution is artfully documented from concept development to implementation and expansion and serves as a model for future conservation challenges.

Robert Streeter, PhD, Assistant Director USFWS (retired)

Only an elder statesman who lived it like Mike Anderson could tell the story of NAWMP from its origins as the largest agro-ecosystem restoration project ever attempted. There are reasons that waterfowl today fare better than other birds, and its all here.

Tom Nudds, PhD, Emeritus Professor, University of Guelph

"A seminal work on waterfowl and wetlands conservation, this book illuminates the enduring impact of the North American Waterfowl Management Plan. Comprehensive and compelling, it is an essential resource for conservationists, policymakers, and scholars dedicated to sustaining wetlands and wildlife."

David Gordon, Division of Bird Habitat Conservation, USFWS (retired)

The North American Waterfowl Management Plan was a bold and audacious undertaking, now spanning 40 years since its inception. Only one person with deep knowledge, insight, and involvement in every step of the process could have summarized the remarkable accomplishments of this groundbreaking effort. Mike Anderson has done a masterful job recording this journey, with an insider's perspective and calm, thoughtful reflection on both its successes and remaining challenges. This book is a tour de force that not only should be on the shelf of every waterfowl scientist and manager but also serves as a casebook study on how to truly make a difference for conservation at a continental scale. It should be required reading for every past, present, and aspiring conservation biologist, wildlife manager, and policy maker in the natural resources.
