In the middle of the night, Daniel and his mother flee their burning home in Mississippi for a bus bound to Chicago. There they find brief peace and safety at his grandparents house. But Daniels mother cannot resist the siren call of a tumultuous relationship and soon abandons Daniel to go back to her abusive partner.
At thirteen, Daniel believes hes almost a man. So its his responsibility to rescue his mother. When an ancient spirit attached to his family becomes interested in his quest, their partnership will both test and temper the love between family members and the lengths theyre willing to go to save one another.
Brandon White holds an MFA in Creative Writing from the University of Houston. He has contributed to Cite Magazine and served as a librettist for the Houston Grand Opera. His fiction has been published in STORGY Magazine, The Journal of Hip Hop Studies, The Brooklyner, and Prevention at the Intersections.
Originally from the Chicagoland area, Brandon is a musician and writer who now resides in Houston after spending time in New York.
