New Zealand sits in a very watery part of the world, with a huge sea area that is home to a fascinating diversity of marine life. Finding out about, understanding and communication this marine environment, its habitats, plants and animals is the task of the Portobello Marine Laboratory and associated New Zealand Marine Studies Centre, located on Otago Harbour in the South Island.
Probert, John Jillett, and Sally Carson (all: marine science, U. Otago, New Zealand) survey the marine wildlife around the Otago Peninsula, trace the scientific research into the wildlife fro 1904 to the present, and describe the activities of the Portobell Aquarium.
