Monarchy, dictatorships, civil war, parliamentary republic – Spain experienced them all and it was not until the much-vaunted ‘Spanish miracle’ of 1961–73 that the country’s economic fortunes began to turn around. Foreign tourists and emigrant remittances, together with foreign capital looking for cheap labour, brought a great deal of rapid economic development that was accelerated by Spain’s entry into the EEC.
