The S.S. 'America' was an ocean liner which entered service in 1940 for the United States Lines. She was designed by the famous naval architect William Francis Gibbs. Bert Lamers (1950) was interested in the shipping industry from an early age. He worked as a sailor at the Verenigde Onafhankelijke Sleepdienst (United Independent Towing Service) and was one of the editors of the maritime magazine De Blauwe Wimpel. Other than that, he also organized many group cruises.
