Editors Markstein (bioinformatics, in silico Labs, LLC) and Xu (biochemistry, molecular biology and bioinformatics, U. of Georgia) have compiled the proceedings of the CSB 2008 conference held at Stanford U., giving researchers and practitioners in the fields of biology, engineering and computational science a survey into the latest advances in bioinformatics theory and applications. These 29 papers from experts in the field cover a wide range of topics such as computational genomics and genetics, structural bioinformatics, microarray data analysis, biological pathways and systems, motif identification and biomedical applications. A section is also devoted to papers on proteomics that includes the use of MSDash (mass spectrometry database and search). Distributed by World Scientific. This proceedings volume contains 29 papers covering many of the latest developments in the fast-growing field of bioinformatics. The contributions span a wide range of topics, including computational genomics and genetics, protein function and computational proteomics, the transcriptome, structural bioinformatics, microarray data analysis, motif identification, biological pathways and systems, and biomedical applications. The papers not only cover theoretical aspects of bioinformatics but also delve into the application of new methods, with input from computation, engineering and biology disciplines. This multidisciplinary approach to bioinformatics gives these proceedings a unique viewpoint of the field.
