Describes some of the more commonly studied epithelia, and presents specific protocols for their cultivation and characterization. The 13 chapters provide detailed instructions for the preparation and culture of human epidermal, mammary, cervical, prostatic, and bronchial epithelial cells. The second edition adds chapters on oral, alveolar, intestinal, and urothelial epithelium. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

"...a wonderful compendium of current in vitro approaches that will be a useful resource to those just starting to work with an epithelial cell system as well as those that have been working with them for years and years."
Pharmaceutical Research

This completely revised and expanded new edition provides detailed descriptions of fundamental and practical aspects relating to the in vitro cultivation of disparate types of epithelia. In recent years, the use of epithelial cell culture in cell biology and tissue engineering has increased dramatically. This revision reflects those advances by including new chapters on the culture of animal and human hepatocytes, kidney epithelium, and bladder epithelium. Each chapter provides an introductory review of the principles and advantages of the particular method, followed by detailed protocols, practical tips, alternate methods, and a useful list of materials and suppliers.

R. Ian Freshney gained a BSc (1960) and PhD (1964) from Glasgow University. He spent 1965 in Madison, Wisconsin, working on cell interaction and differentiation of embryonic mouse liver before returning to Glasgow to join the Beatson Institute for Cancer Research until 1981. At this time he transferred to Medical Oncology at Glasgow University, where he became a senior lecturer, teaching cell culture and tumor cell biology, with research interests in stromal interaction and differentiation in tumors. He is now an honorary senior research fellow at Glasgow University, focusing his attention on teaching, writing and editing in the field of cell culture. Mary G. Freshney gained considerable tissue culture experience, initially as a technician with Dr. John Paul, and laterally as a scientific assistant working on hematopoietic stem cells at the Beatson Institute, where she had the major responsibility for the management of the cell culture facility.
