These proceedings of the June 2000 conference bring together 100 plus papers dealing with a variety of topics relating to flow-induced vibration and noise, such as: vortex-induced vibration and noise, vibration of heat-exchanger tube bundles, progress in fluid-structure interaction theory and CFD simulation, flow-sound interaction, oscillations of free shear flows, thermo-acoustic instabilities, and vibration of hydraulic structures, turbomachines and piping systems. Some sample paper titles are flutter characteristics of 2-box girders for super-long span bridges, numerical study of flow around cylinders, wind-induced vibration of offshore platforms, optimization of the location of a silencer in a hydraulic circuit, and instability of a blade for paper coating. Flow-induced vibrations and noise continue to cause problems in a wide range of engineering applications ranging from civil engineering and marine structures to power generation and chemical processing. These proceedings bring together more than a hundred papers dealing with a variety of topics relating to flow-induced vibration and noise. The contents of this work constitute a mix of investigations by those working on the mechanisms of vibration and means of their alleviation, and studies by those in industry who draw on the present state of knowledge of these mechanisms to avoid or solve flow-induced vibration and noise problems in industrial applications.
