This Primer provides insight into the significance of interior spaces and experiences. This book provides both interior design students and instructors, a clear and cohesive structure to understand and engage the important contributions that comprise interiors theory from core to emerging areas of the discipline.

In a world where life is increasingly defined by interior conditions, this Primer provides insight into the significance of interior spaces and experiences. This book draws upon a range of historic to contemporary scholarship and design project examples to discuss significant areas of interest in interiors.

Organized into three sections, this book addresses long-standing issues at the core of interiors, starting with questions of experience and inhabitation, before moving to emerging areas of concern such as virtuality, biophilia, and social justice. Each chapter presents a key interior design topic, reviewing pertinent scholarship and design precedents and offering suggestions for further reading related to each topic. While there is an expanding body of literature that seeks to explain and theorize interior spaces and experiences, there has not—until now—been a cohesive attempt to organize and articulate the major ideas and themes. The exploration of interior spaces encapsulates real experience, as well as exploring the significance of interior design as a professional and academic discipline.

The Interiors Theory Primer provides both interior design students and instructors, a clear and cohesive structure to understand and engage the important contributions that comprise interiors theory from core to emerging areas of the discipline.

William Mangold is an assistant professor in the Department of Architecture, Design, and Urbanism at Drexel University and former director of the graduate program in Interior Architecture. William received degrees in Fine Arts and Architecture from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). In New York City, he completed renovation and restoration projects with Ivan Brice Architecture and taught interior design at Pratt Institute, while working on a PhD in the Environmental Psychology program at The Graduate Center, CUNY.

Williams work explores the intersections of people and place, with a focus on well-being and social responsibility. As a trained cabinet maker and experienced designer, William integrates hands-on making with theoretical inquiry to deepen understanding of interior experiences. William is NCIDQ certified and maintains a small design practice in Philadelphia. He is an editor of The People, Place, and Space Reader (2014), which examines topics such as home, urban experience, and public space. His latest book, The Interiors Theory Primer, provides a comprehensive introduction to the key concepts and debates shaping interior design theory today.
