The author offers a history and analysis of the Laser and Electro-Optics Manufacturers' Association (LEOMA) from the 1980s to now, giving insight into the industry's policies and procedures. Hitz discusses the association's successes as well as its failures in forming a cohesive entity in an emerging industry. Chapters include "Professional Societies and the Photonics Community," The Federal Government," "Export Controls," and "International Laser Standards." The text also includes several informative appendices including a list of officers and executive seminars. Annotation ©2015 Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR (protoview.com)

The U.S. laser industry is a major player in the country's economy, with its products used in factories, laboratories, offices, homes and motor vehicles around the country.

Hitz book describes the approaches, both successful and not, to the political and infrastructure issues addressed by the trade association. The intent is to provide guidance to those confronting similar issues, and help them avoid unsuccessful approaches.

  • Includes end-of-chapter summaries
  • Example of documents and approaches that LEOMA used successfully are included and could serve as a guide to other trade associations.
  • Chapter 5 includes figures presenting the unique and effective graphical approach that LEOMA use to improve US national-security export controls
