Wharam (a retired lawyer and teacher of the law) presents cases selected from some 200 that were reported in a six-volume set of State Trials published in London in 1730. The series reported on criminal and other important trials that had taken place as early as the late 14th century; Wharam has chosen 17th- and 18th-century cases that shed light on various aspects of contemporary life, that are of particular historical importance, and one the elopement of Henrietta Berkeley simply because it "reads like a forerunner to one of Jane Austen's novels." The cases tell of killings, kidnappings, duels, piracy, witchcraft, and other mayhem. Wharam's introduction provides an overview of the English judicial system of the time. Annotation c.
