Rock mechanics is a multidisciplinary subject that uses the principles of mechanical science to investigate rock engineering behaviour. An important part of rock mechanics is laboratory studies of rock behaviour. Rock Mechanics: Theoretical Foundations of Laboratory Tests is the first book that introduces the theoretical foundations of laboratory testing in an analytical manner.

It covers all main aspects, from the definition and classification of intact rock, sampling and specimen preparation, petrographic description and physical properties, and wave velocity and dynamic elastic constants, via durability and deterioration, hardness and abrasiveness, seepage and permeability, and expansion and swelling, to compressive strength and deformability, tensile strength, and shear strength.

This book can be used as a textbook for undergraduate, master's, and doctoral students in engineering geology, civil engineering, geotechnical engineering and mining engineering (rock mechanics). It will also appeal to professionals in consulting engineering companies and rock mechanics laboratories, and to geological, civil and mining engineers.

Davood Fereidooni, a native of Hamedan, Iran, is an accomplished academic and researcher with over two decades of experience in engineering geology and rock mechanics. He has also spent five years working in executive roles with consulting engineer specializing in engineering geology and geotechnical engineering. Since 2014, he has served as a full-time faculty member at the School of Earth Sciences, Damghan University, Iran, primarily contributing to postgraduate education. He is now the head of department and has been honored three times as Distinguished Researcher. Dr. Fereidooni holds a patent for a geotechnical testing apparatus, has authored four books and, one translated volume, more than 50 peer-reviewed research articles in international journals, and over 40 conference papers. He has participated in the successful completion of two national research projects and serves on the editorial boards of two reputable international journals as associate editor. His research interests include engineering geology and rock mechanics in laboratory and field.
