In honor of the 60th anniversary of the Singapore Children's Society, this volume explores childhood in Singapore over the past 60 years and how the city's transformations have affected children. Koh, a writer with experience in the media and cultural heritage industries in Singapore, draws from her own memories and those of others, books, newspapers, and other documents to describe various themes in the experience of childhood. These consist of cultural practices surrounding childbirth and its celebrations and the development of medical services relating to childbirth, how childcare practices and home life have changed, the changing idea of play, the school experience, and the development of health and welfare services for children. Many b&w and color photos are included. A Chinese edition of the book has also been published. Annotation ©2013 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
