A beautifully photographed visual dictionary of the essential signs to learn in ASL, American Sign Language

With over 4,400 reviews for his benchmark American Sign Language Flashcards (500) book, and a career working at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf, Geoff Poor is the doyen of ASL teachers.

1000 ASL Words doubles the amount of signs that were included in his successful flashcard set, and whereas the first was signed by deaf native signer, Christine Kim, this more recent work has two deaf native signers articulating words Darren Fudenske and Lauren Ridloff (now one of Americas leading deaf actors, 835k followers on Instagram)

In addition to the book, there is the potential to include a DVD of 1,063 of the signs demonstrated in real time by the two signers. This asset can be used either as a promotional tool, or included in any learning package. Each sign is repeated to help learn the hand movements and there is an option to run the signs without the accompanying word caption.

In the book, each sign is demonstrated with close-up sequential color photos supplemented by written descriptions of all hand and finger formations and movements. The photos include directional arrows to indicate the correct hand and arm movements

Apart from a rich vocabulary of the most commonly used words there are themed sections on numbers, alphabet, days of the week, colors and countries, making it a fully comprehensive ASL package.
Geoffrey S. Poor is an associate professor with the Department of Sign Language and Interpreting Education at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf in New York. Previously he was an instructor of American Sign Language (ASL) at the University of Maine and worked for the State of Maine as a vocational rehabilitation counsellor for the deaf.
