The idea of the interactive and intelligent environment refers to a computing paradigm wherein users are immersed in a persistent interface and have seamless access to both the physical and non-physical (informational) aspects of their world. In other words, computers in the environment would be able to respond to natural gestures and voices without the need for user-specific input devices. This work presents 13 contributions from the computer vision research community on work in this area. Topics include markerless motion capture using multiple cameras; calibrating visual sensors and actuators in distributed platforms; representing actions of objects in intelligent environments; situated observation of human activity; computer vision technologies for remote collaboration using physical whiteboards, projectors, and cameras; generic object recognizer design; and ambient projection for intelligent environments.
