Academic librarians Owens and Daul-Elhindi outline a five-step framework for integrating mindfulness, emotional intelligence, and critical reflection into librarianship, to help academic librarians become more purposeful and engaged in interactions with students, faculty, and staff. They describe the role of mindful practice and remaining in the moment to respond authentically and nonjudgmentally as situations arise; the importance of emotional awareness; using engaged communication through awareness of nonverbal communication, deep listening, and deliberate two-way communication; integrating empathetic reflection and action, a continuous state of learning about situational context and reacting in a considerate and appropriate way; and the role of reassurance, the intentional act of bolstering one's own and others’ confidence. They include practice exercises and semi-autobiographical case studies from their own work, along with practical essays from librarians and educators at universities around the US.
