Papers from a November 2001 symposium report on recent advances in string processing and information retrieval. Topics include distributed query processing using partitioned inverted files, a subquadratic algorithm for cluster and outlier detection in massive metric data, exact distribution of delection sizes for unavoidable strings, and online construction of symmetric compact directed acyclic word graphs. Other subjects include a model for the representation and focused retrieval of structured documents based on fuzzy aggregation, storing semistructured data in relational databases, speed-up of Aho- Corasick pattern matching machines by rearranging states, a stemming algorithm for the Portuguese language, and security in compressed information retrieval systems. This work lacks a subject index. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
