Presents the entire field of aggregates, from deposits to finished products. Examines the economic importance of aggregates in building construction and roadworks, then looks at environmental and legal issues. Explains properties of rocks and aggregates, and details various processes for extracting and handling massive rocks and sands and gravels. Discusses engineering problems in processing plants, and plant issues such as automation, quality control, and safety. The editors have taught at France's National School of Bridges and Highways. Originally published as Granulats , 1990, by Presses de l'Ecole Nationale des Ponts et ChaussTes, Paris. Updates were provided by the authors for the English edition in 1998. Lacks a subject index. This work comprehensively explores the field of 'aggregates', from natural deposits through to finished products, including sections on the aggregates market in France, tests and specifications, transportation, quarrying, and crushing and grinding.

This work sets out to explore the "aggregates" field in a comprehensive manner, from natural deposits to finished products. Topics covered include: the aggregates market in France; tests and specifications; loading and transport; the quarrying of massive rocks; and crushing and grinding.

Louis Primel holds a Ph.D. in applied geology. He has devoted a major part of his career to studies and research on aggregates, anti was associated with such research projects which were being carried out by the network of Bridges and Highways Laboratories in collaboration with producers of aggregates and manufacturers of equipment. He has also been a teacher at the Ecole Nationale des Pants et Chaussees (ENPC) (National School of Bridges and Highways) and Secretary-General of the International Association for Engineering Geology and the Environment.

Claude Tourenq, a Ph.D. in applied geology, has carried out research on the physical and mechanical properties of rocks at the Central Laboratory of Bridges and Highways in Paris, and during the same period he taught geology applied to civil engineering at the Ecole Nation ale des Ponts et Chaussees. He then specialized in the field of aggregates.
