In response to Margaret Thatcher's neoliberal pronouncement that "There is no alternative," the World Social Forum and other opponents of the Washington Consensus declared "Another world is possible!" This volume is one of five dedicated to exploring the contours of that other world, a world beyond capitalism. The editor (a professor of sociology at the U. of Coimbra, Portugal) presents case studies of alternative models of non-capitalist production, land management, and labor solidarity from around the world, including garbage collection and recycling cooperatives in Colombia, agricultural cooperatives in Mozambique, the activities of Brazil's Landless Peasant Worker's Movement, union networking in the Southern Initiative on Globalization and Trade Union Rights, strikes by metalworkers in Brazil, and organizing among fishermen in India's southern state of Kerala. Other volumes are concerned with participatory democracy and alternative epistemologies and discourses. Annotation ©2006 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

Praise for the Reinventing Social Emancipation project:

"At last, someone is putting concrete analysis on 'counter-hegemonicglobalization from the bottom up.' Boaventura de Sousa Santos hasassembled social scientists from Latin America, Africa and Asia todescribe another kind of democracy, full of lessons for the benightedcountries of the North, where it should be mandatory reading forserious people." - Immanuel Wallerstein, Yale University

"Inthe 1980s, Margaret Thatcher declared 'There is no alternative.' At thebeginning of the 21st century the World Social Forum replied, 'AnotherWorld Is Possible.' The project, Reinventing Social Emancipation, is apassionate and wide-ranging effort at enriching our vision of thatother world." -Erik Olin Wright, University of Wisconsin
