The editors plan is for a book which offers a comprehensive overview of the different display and HMI (Human Machine Interface) technologies which are currently being used in automotive applications, or which are under active development and consideration for use in this rapidly expanding field. The automotive application area has unique characteristics, constraints and challenges which will be described and explored in depth; in particular, the automotive HMI must comply with requirements to convey critical information and collect feedback from the user, while maintaining safety in the passenger compartment and imposing a minimum cognitive load on the driver. The volume will, therefore, require and include detailed descriptions of the underlying regulatory, human factors and vehicle integration requirements and the engineering challenges facing HMI systems which include displays augmented by visual, touch/haptic and auditory components.
