Construction is the means used by the designing architect and engineer to transform a design idea into built reality. From this perspective, the subject of 'building-construction design' is dealt with by architect José Luis Moro in four comprehensive volumes. They are respectively dedicated to the methodological, physical, and functional principles, the conception of a constructional basic solution, and finally its implementation in the constructional detail. Not only is a wide range of content covered, but the greatest possible clarity is also ensured in order to make it easier for students to access the subject matter. An important focus of the work lies both on conveying technical and scientific factual information as well as on demonstrating complex relationships and interactions between design, material, and construction.

Volume 2 deals with constructional aspects that influence the conceptual design of buildings and their components. This includes the assembly of building envelopeslarge-format continuous surface elementsfrom individual components, taking into account different variants of flat and curved geometry and basic constructional design. As a further conceptually determining constructional criterion, primary supporting structures are dealt with in their most important elementary manifestations. In addition, established, predominantly material-related construction methods used in building practice are discussed.

Professor José Luis Moro has been Professor of Fundamentals of Planning and Design in Building Construction at the University of Stuttgart since 1995 and Professor of Design and Construction since 2006. He is a member of both faculties Architecture and Civil Engineering. His research activities focus on the building envelope and design-relevant interactions between construction and architectural form. Professor Moro has had his own architectural practice since 1990.
