Arvustused

A group of butterflies is called a kaleidoscope. And thats exactly what Butterfly Stitches gives you: a collection of twelve designs of winged creatures. Each design is worked two ways. The first option uses a range of surface stitches on fabric. The second builds up the design in layers of wool appliqué, finished with stitch and bead embellishment. The effects are startlingly different; you dont instantly recognise them as being based on the same design. This encourages you to give things your own twist which ultimately is what Catherine wants.

In line with her folk-art influences, Catherines designs start with chain stitch. So its no surprise, this is the stitch with deeper instruction on its formation and multiple variations. Thereafter, there is a degree of assumed knowledge. The book doesnt lack anything because of this. To the contrary, it means the focus is firmly on creating the butterflies. In fact, its a fun and colourful combination of entomology and embroidery! * Stitch * You have to see the wonderful creations in this book to see just how beautiful they truly are. The delicacy of the embroidery brings the creatures to life and they really are just amazing.

The author gives a stitch guide and instructions to make the butterflies, and templates are littered throughout the book for each design. I just adore the colours she has chosen and the look is that of folk art, which is very on trend at the moment in the crafting world.

These butterflies can be used as brooches or decorations for cushions, bags and so much more. Slow stitching is very mindful and the techniques involved in the making of these beauties will ensure some quiet time and give endless pleasure. -- Tracy Shephard * Postcard Reviews *
