This large-format publication invites readers to look over Jacques Herzogs shoulder during the development of the project from its genesis. Numerous sketches and intimate drawings are grouped into ten chapters, from Vertical Stacks of Fragments to The Underground Is Not Innocent, each accompanied by a highly personal short text. As Herzog writes in his preface, The drawings express uncertainty and doubt, perhaps also enthusiasm in moments when they made me believe I was reaching a new step in finding out what the architectural and sculptural identity of the project was going to be. A selection of collages and study models round out this deep-dive into the acclaimed architects working method, artistic intelligence, and creative approach born of questioning.

Jacques Herzog (b. 1950) is a Swiss architect and co-founder of architectural firm Herzog & De Meuron. He studied architecture at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETHZ) with Aldo Rossi and Dolf Schnebli from 1970 to 1975. Together with Pierre de Meuron, he established Herzog & de Meuron in Basel in 1978. He has been visiting professor at Harvard University, USA since 1989, and was professor at ETH Zürich and co-founder of ETH Studio Basel Contemporary City Institute, from 1999 until 2018. Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron were awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize (2001), the RIBA Royal Gold Medal (UK, 2007), the Praemium Imperiale (Japan, 2007), and the Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize (USA, 2014). In 2015, they co-founded the charitable foundation Jacques Herzog und Pierre de Meuron Kabinett, Basel.
