This book contains peer reviewed papers presented at the 'International Symposium on Suction, Swelling, Permeability and Structure of Clays' held at the Granship in Shizuoka, Japan, in January 2001. The symposium was organized to promote the exchange of the latest developments in research and practice in the disciplines of geotechnical engineering, clay science and geochemistry concerned with the study and determination of the fundamental properties of clay liner and buffer materials. The papers in this book have been grouped together into five major topics: Suction and swelling; Permeability and contaminant transport; Structure of clays; Soil interactions; and Clay liner and buffer materials.
