The Directive 86/653 has impacted commercial agencies operating in France and the UK. This study analyzes the Directive in depth, paying particular attention to the working of the French system on which many aspects of the Directive are based. The Directive is examined in terms of its strengths and weaknesses by evaluating it against its two aims, the reinforced protection of commercial agents and harmonization. The study also considers the evolution of the rules regulating the French and English commercial agency relationship before and after the implementation of the Directive, and compares the implementation and effects of the Directive in the two countries.
