The Van Panchayat in Uttarakhand, India, is a unique community forest management system, the only one incorporated into the Indian Forest Act of 1927. Originating from local resistance against British colonial control of forest resources in the early 19th century, this system has evolved over the last 93 years. The book offers a comprehensive view of the Van Panchayat Institution, covering the British colonial policies on forest control and the subsequent developments. It compiles all published work on Van Panchayat, making it the first book dedicated to this system. The chapters explore various aspects like forestry, policy, management, environment, ecology, economics, and social and institutional dimensions, providing a holistic understanding of the subject.

Arvustused

'The uniqueness of the book lies in its contents and lucid description of all possible aspects of Van Panchayat ranging from management, social science, political science, ecology and policy. The book, I am sure will be useful to, and appreciated by students, researchers and policy makers in the field of forestry, community forestry, environmental science, management, polity and social science. The book fills the knowledge gap which exists at present because of absence of good literature on the subject.'Dr Jagdish KishwanFormer Member of Indian Forest Service and Chancellor FRI University, Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India
