In a volume dedicated to the memory of Yehuda Vardi (former chair, statistics, Rutgers U.), Liu and colleagues present 21 papers from a conference held in his honor at Rutgers in October 2005. The conference on networks and other emerging areas attracted researchers working in statistics, computer and communication networks, and government agencies. Few statistical tools have been developed for analyzing complex network data, but they can be usefully treated as inverse problems. Tomography involves gathering projection data from multiple directions and feeding them into a tomographic reconstruction software algorithm. For example, new applications are presented on exploring network characteristics and estimating delays on the Internet. Not indexed. Annotation ©2007 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
