This book, now available for the first time in an English translation, was published in Dutch in 1732 by lawyer Gerard van Loon. His aim was to give the reader a pleasant and informative tour of the history of coins and medals and the result is an astonishing, entertaining and surprisingly modern numismatic work. The format, layout and plates of this English translation follow closely those of the original edition. This translation opens up to modern readers of all kinds the fascinating thoughts and advice of a numismatist, historian and philosopher who lived and wrote more than a quarter of a millennium age.

Arvustused

'This beautifully produced work is the culmination of a long-time ambition of Dr. Turfboer's, and is a tribute to his persistence and dedication. It is a very welcome translation of an important early work, and through it we can better understand the evolution of collection as a science and hobby.' Wayne G. Sayles, The Celator, 1995. 'This book was originally published in 1732, but van Loon wrote for the ages, and with NI member Dr. Turfboer's excellent translation, and extremely professional printing by E.J. Brill Publishers, it is as current as if written today. Further it is profusely illustrated with drawings that modern photography would find hard to beat.' Granvyl G. Hulse, NI Bulletin, 1996.

Robert Turfboer M.D., is a retired psychiatrist, living in the United States. He received his MD at the University of Leiden. His previous publications include Tempus in Nummis (1993 Numismatics International, Dallas, Texas).
