Social dilemma or collective action problems are ubiquitous across human affairs from the management of natural resources to the prevention of suicide bombing. In this collection, the editors (of Israel's U. of Haifa and Ben Gurion U. and the US's U. of Illinois and Northwestern U.) present 18 papers of recent psychological research on the problem. The papers are organized into sections dealing with individual differences in social dilemmas, dynamical aspects of social dilemmas, social dilemmas in intergroup conflicts, and uncertainty and cooperation in social dilemmas. This book provides an overview of the state of social psychological research on social dilemmas, or situations in which the interests of the collective and its individual members clash. A wide variety of methodological and theoretical approaches are organized around four core issues: individual differences in preferences for outcomes promoting individual or collective well being; dynamic processes in large-scale dilemmas; special problems emerging in inter-group conflicts; and the effect of uncertainty on behavior in social dilemmas.

This book provides an overview of the state of social psychological research on social dilemmas.
