Best friends Kip, Albert, Leela, and Timmi uncover a new series of ingeniously hidden riddles, propelling them on a perilous quest. Aided by big-hearted android Incognita and other unexpected AI allies, they set sail in an extraordinary vessel, The Salamander, on a journey beneath the Earth's crust. As the Grittleshank Cooperative's subterranean smoulderstone mine threatens global catastrophe, Kip faces an impossible choice: stop them or save his captive mother.

With more adventure, more inventions, and a large helping of sideways thinking, this is an action-packed close to the trilogy, following The Ten Riddles of Eartha Quicksmith and The Myriad Mysteries of Eartha Quicksmith.
Loris Owen grew up loving Roald Dahl, J.R.R. Tolkien, Tove Jansson, C.S. Lewis, Susan Cooper and Lewis Carroll. There's nothing she enjoys more than adventure stories about other worlds. Favourite contemporary MG authors include Philip Pullman, Markus Zusak, Kieran Larwood and Louis Sachar.

Some interesting facts about Loris: she piloted a plane some time before she first got in the driving seat of a car; her best holiday memory is holding hands with a wild green turtle when diving in Oman; she enjoys a good puzzle and her favourite word is metagrobologist. Born in Bolton and made in Zimbabwe, Loris has lived and worked in several countries in Europe, Africa and the Middle East. Animals and nature have always been a creative force for her, and you'll always find a lovable animal somewhere in her writing. Her first novel, The Ten Riddles of Eartha Quicksmith was selected for the Summer Reading Challenge, in conjunction with the Science Museum. Author website: lorisowen.com.
