A fascinating new entry in this popular series, exploring Britain's LGBTQ+ history through objects recorded by the Portable Antiquities Scheme.

The LGBTQ+ community is made up of a range of different sexualities and gender expressions. Although the terms we use to categorize this diversity did not exist in the past, that doesn’t mean that diversity didn’t exist. Some historical figures we know had same sex relationships, while others did not follow the gender norms of the day. Symbols that are used by the LGBTQ+ community can be found in the past, though their use and meaning might have changed over time. This book explores themes relating to LGBTQ+ life and history, using objects found by members of the public and recorded with the Portable Antiquities Scheme. From a coin of the Roman Emperor Hadrian to a small lead bear toy, this book also covers the rich depth of history and range of objects that can be seen on the PAS database.

Arvustused

'Ben Paites' addition to the '50 Finds' series is a well-researched and nuanced exploration of the history of sexuality through material culture.' * Current Archaeology Magazine, April 2025 *

Ben Paites is one of the curators at Colchester Museums. Before this, he spent many years working with the Portable Antiquities Scheme recording hundreds of objects across Essex and London. His main areas of interest are the histories of marginalised people, with a particular focus on the Roman World and British archaeology and history. As a curator, he has produced many exhibitions, covering themes such as the witch trials and Medieval Jewish history, as well as appearing on several TV shows and podcasts talking about a wide range of historical topics.
