The A4 Pacific locomotive No. 60009 Union of South Africa has recently been retired and put into a museum; here, this famous loco’s support crew share their memories and anecdotes of working to keep it running for the enjoyment of thousands of railway enthusiasts over the years. With experiences stretching back to 1966, when the loco was first purchased from British Railway, these stories are sometimes funny and sometimes serious; all offer a fascinating insight into what it takes to keep a magnificent machine on the rails. Supported by a range of previously unpublished images, this is a wonderful tribute to a terrific locomotive.

Former members of the support crew of the famous Union of South Africa locomotive share their memories, supported by a wealth of previously unpublished images.
Michael has lived in Fife all his life and is married with a grown up daughter and two granddaughters. He is a bus driver with Stagecoach East Scotland, based at Glenrothes Depot and was a delivery and fork lift driver prior to this. Before taking up driving he worked for 18 years in a grain mill which supplied barley to the Scotch Whisky industry. His interest in railways goes back fifty years and he has been photographing railway subjects for most of this time. He is a member of the support crew which looks after the two main line registered steam locomotives, 60009 Union of South Africa and 61994 The Great Marquess.
