Gene therapy offers tremendous potential for treating diseases by delivering therapeutic genomic materials to target cells. However, the success of these treatments depends entirely on how effectively these materials can be delivered to the right location. This book addresses this fundamental challenge. The volume examines three main delivery approaches. Viral vectorsincluding adenovirus, lentivirus, adeno-associated virüs, and othershave proven highly efficient for gene transfer. Non-viral systems offer safer alternatives, ranging from liposomes and nanoparticles to extracellular vesicles. Physical methods such as microinjection, photoporation, and sonoporation provide additional options for introducing genes into cells.International experts contribute chapters covering each delivery system's mechanisms, advantages, and limitations. The book balances technical depth with accessibility, making complex concepts understandable to diverse readers. It highlights recent advances, clinical applications, and future directions in the field. This resource can serve researchers developing new delivery strategies, clinicians implementing gene therapies, graduate students, and professionals in biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. It can provide essential knowledge for anyone working to advance gene therapy from laboratory to clinical practice.
Associate Prof Dr Handan Kayhan is a faculty member at Gazi University, Faculty of Medicine, Türkiye, specializing in gene therapy, cancer biology, and biotechnology. Her research focuses on developing and testing non-viral gene delivery systems in vitro, with particular emphasis on their therapeutic applications. She continues to conduct active research in cancer biology and extracellular vesicles.Dr Kayhan has made significant contributions to exosome research, including the development of an innovative isolation method for exosomes. In recent years, her work has concentrated on exosome-based delivery systems for gene therapy applications. She founded Exo-Life Biotechnology Ltd, a research and development company dedicated to commercializing her innovative methods and bringing laboratory discoveries to practical applications. She has published numerous peer-reviewed articles in international journals and contributed chapters to academic volumes. Dr Kayhan has established collaborative research networks with international scholars in gene therapy and biomedical engineering. As editor of this book, she brings together multidisciplinary perspectives on gene delivery systems, bridging fundamental research with clinical and commercial applications.
