This book focuses on recent advances in dental gold alloys and gold nanoparticles (GNPs) for biomedical applications. Dental gold alloys combine several highly desirable mechanical properties, such as high strength, ductility, and elasticity, with extremely robust chemical stability in the mouth, known as high biocompatibility. The new edition presents advanced dental gold alloys for fixed dentures, evaluating the influence of individual elements on the mechanical and other characteristics of the alloys.

In the section on the use of GNPs as novel gold biomaterials that provide a multifunctional platform for cellular imaging, biosensing, and targeted drug delivery in tumor immunotherapy and photothermal therapy, their application for incorporation into creams and for rapid LFIA tests is demonstrated.

Starting with a comprehensive review of the development and application of dental gold alloys, the book discusses the properties of materials that are crucial for dental applications, focusing on aspects such as microstructure, mechanical properties, chemical and corrosion stability, aging, biocompatibility, and color stability. The book then focuses on the use of GNPs in dental applications, delving into various GNP synthesis techniques to specifically tailor size, shape, and stability in biological media. The new supplement presents the scientific knowledge for the use of GNPs in creams and the studies needed to evaluate their safe use. The fact is that the characterization and safety assessment of nanoparticles and other nanomaterials in cosmetics is very challenging. Cosmetic creams are complex media with multiple components that can affect the physical and chemical properties of nanomaterials, alter their behavior and complicate the transfer of their toxicological aspects to different cosmetic formulations.

In addition to these factors, it discusses how their route of exposure, surface chemistry, and how steric effects of their coating affect the biodistribution and determine the level of toxicity of GNPs in the human body. The final section presents the global manufacturers of GNPs and the characteristics of their products. This book contains reviews of the current literature and updated published experimental results and offers an attractive resource for practicing scientists and engineers working in the field of various types of gold-based biomaterials.

Rebeka Rudolf after graduation from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in the University of Maribor, Slovenia, continued with postgraduate studies (masters degree in 1997) up to a Doctorate in 2002. She has been employed permanently at the University since 1993. In 2006, she was additionally employed by Zlatarna Celje d.o.o. as Research Manager and as Leader of the Research Group. In 2017, she achieved the level of Research Counsellor and in 2023 Full position of Professor in the University of Maribor within habilitation field: Materials. At the end of 2023, she was additionally employed by Pomurje Science and Innovation Center, Murska Sobota as Research Councillor. 



Vojkan Lazi is Full Professor and Dean at the School of Dental Medicine at the University of Belgrade. After graduation from the School of Dental Medicine in Belgrade in 1991, he continued with a Master of Science Degree in 1998 to a Doctorate in 2003. He has been employed at the University permanently since 1994. Since then, he has been involved in teaching and research, especially in dental materials. The main research is in the field of new dental alloys for ceramic fused to metal restorations, acrylic resin with nanoparticles for complete or partial dentures and silicones for epitheses. He was Participant and Main Researcher in six scientific projects, mainly in dental materials.



Peter Majeri completed his university education in 2012 at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, University of Maribor. He then continued with Doctoral studies at the Institute of Materials Technology at the same faculty. He worked on a production process for the production of gold nanoparticles in collaboration with IME, the Institute für Metallurgische Prozesstechnik und Metallrecycling, RWTH Aachen University in Germany.



Andrej Ivani is an Associate Professor and Dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering and Architecture at the Universi-ty of Maribor, where he is included in teaching and research work. The main in-terests of his research include Composite materials, Biomaterials, Nanomaterials, Metal alloys, Concrete, Recycled materials and mechanical testing of various ma-terials and structures.



Karlo T. Rai is a Professor Emeritus at the Department of Metallurgical Engineering (DME), Faculty of Technology and Metallurgy, University of Belgrade, Serbia (FTM-UB-Ser). His teachings span a broad range of courses, including Transport Phenomena in Materials Engineering, Surface Engineering, Metallic Materials in Medicine, and Iron and Steel-selected Topics. Actively involved in academic and research communities, Professor Rai has participated in and coordinated numerous national and international projects. Additionally, he has provided invaluable mentorship as a thesis advisor and served on various organizing committees.
