Gobo introduces mostly students but also practitioners of sociology to co-ordinates and bases of a research practice that has been considered anti-methodological, and bereft of standard procedures and encoded usages. Ethnography does not have a single unique and universal approach, he admits, but neither is it haphazard: there is a circumscribed set of research strategies to be adopted according to the theoretical perspective taken. He discusses the definition and history of the methodology and research design issues; theoretical, ethical, and technical issues of collecting information and organization a database; analyzing materials and accountability of findings; and communicating findings to diverse audiences.
