The encyclopedia owes its existence in part to the influence of the great French Encyclopedie and not least to the entrepreneurial instincts of three Scots men: Andrew Bell, Colin Macfarquhar, and William Smellie. Following an introductory chapter, full texts of letterpress articles on architecture, fortification, and gardening are presented. The survey is based upon the first edition, and concludes with observations concerning the publication of subsequent editions. The original preface and list of authors and sources are included.
