Fat grafting has emerged as one of the most versatile and promising tools in modern Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery. Despite its widespread use, techniques and outcomes still vary significantly. Essentials of Fat Grafting bridges this gap with a unique, four-level structure that guides the reader from foundational techniques to advanced clinical applications—all grounded in evidence-based practice.

This comprehensive volume features contributions from over 60 internationally recognized experts, including Eckhard Alt, Geoffrey Gurtner, Amin Kalaaji, Roger Khouri, Lauren Kokai, Kotaro Yoshimura, Tsai-Ming Lin, Norbert Pallua, Rod Rohrich, Aris Sterodimas, Joris van Dongen and Alexis Verpaele. Their collective knowledge is distilled into practical checklists, decision-making algorithms, and step-by-step video tutorials.

The book provides detailed guidance on optimizing every stage of the fat grafting process—harvesting, processing, and reinjection—enabling clinicians to achieve superior and reproducible results. Professor Prantl presents his own innovations, while expert insights from a diverse range of specialists offer real-world solutions and recommendations for clinical implementation, particularly in the integration of fat and stem cell therapies.

Clear flowcharts and structured protocols ensure that even complex procedures become accessible, combining hands-on practicality with a solid scientific foundation.

This book is an essential resource for practitioners in Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery, Regenerative Medicine, Dermatology, Gynaecology, ENT, Urology, and Orthopaedics. It is designed to be both thought-provoking and practical—a trusted companion for daily clinical work.

A Pathway to Mastery:

·      Level 1 – Beginner: Clear, easy-to-follow instructions and standard operating procedures for Cell-Enriched Lipotransfer (CELT), illustrated through flowcharts and high-definition videos.

·      Level 2 – Advanced: In-depth exploration of key principles in fat harvesting, processing, and reinjection, presented by world-renowned experts.

·      Level 3 – Expert: Comprehensive, translational insights covering fat grafting from laboratory research to clinical application.

·      Level 4 – Specialist: Deep dives into subspecialties—ranging from facial rejuvenation and large-volume breast or gluteal augmentation to musculoskeletal, neurological, and exosome-based therapies.

Professor Lukas Prantl, M.D., Ph.D., MHBA, FACS, is an internationally distinguished plastic, reconstructive, and aesthetic surgeon. He serves as Professor and Founding Chair of the Center for Plastic and Aesthetic, Hand and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of Regensburg, Germany.

Over the course of his career, Professor Prantl has been honored with numerous prestigious national and international research awards. He is a frequent chair and a regularly invited faculty member at leading scientific congresses worldwide. As a pioneering clinician-scientist, he has authored more than 400 peer-reviewed publications and contributed 37 chapters to academic textbooks in the field.

He holds visiting professorships at several world-renowned institutions, including the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Stanford University, Bashkir State University (Russia), and Fudan University in Shanghai.

Professor Prantl is the founder of the Applied Stem Cell Research Center and an integral member of the Interdisciplinary Stem Cell Team. His recent research focuses on the isolation and clinical application of adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) for tissue regeneration. In this context, he has developed a proprietary technique for stem cell enrichmentCell-Enriched Lipotransfer (CELT)which significantly enhances graft survival and integration.

In addition to his clinical and scientific work, he is the creator of PlastiCademy, an evidence-based digital learning platform dedicated to the advancement of education in plastic surgery.

Professor Prantl served as President of the German Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery from 2019 to 2021. He currently holds the presidency of the European Society for Clinical Microcirculation and Tissue Transplantation (2023). Moreover, he has been designated President of the German Society of Surgery (DGCH)the umbrella organization of all surgical specialties in Germanyfor the year 2028.
