Describing fiber optic measurement systems for industrial and biomedical applications, this book underlines the advantages compared to conventional measuring systems. It presents the various requirements necessary, and describes their applications, with a strong focus on applications that have already been commercially implemented. Each chapter highlights specific fiber optic sensor technologies, and contains an introduction to the basic principles of the relevant technology.

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Robert Schmitt, born 1961, completed his studies on Electrical Engineering with the specialisation on Communications Engineering at the Technical University of Aachen in 1989. He became Professor at the Technical University of Aachen on July 1st, 2004. He has been Head of Department for Metrology and Quality Management at the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) since September 2004 and became member of the Board of Directors at the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology IPT where he is also Head of Department for Metrology and Quality Management. In 2010 he became Managing Director of the WZL. Dipl.-Phys. Niels Konig was born in 1974 and graduated from the Technical University of Aachen with a degree in Physics and a specialisation on Solid-State Physics and Biomedical Engineering. Since 2007 he is a scientific staff member of Prof. Schmitt in the Department for Production Metrology at Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology IPT. Since 2010 he heads the group for fiber-optic sensors. His focus of work lies in the design and fabrication of fiber-optic sensing probes. Chapter authors (to be finalized) Dipl.-Phys.
