Eight authors were given the freedom of their chosen English Heritage site, from medieval castles to a Cold War nuclear bunker. Immersed in the past and chilled by rumours of hauntings, they channelled their darker imaginings into a series of extraordinary new ghost stories. Following these stories by the eight contemporary writers, is a section by Andrew Martin on ghost stories and the sites that inspired them, and following that a section on accounts of strange happenings and sightings at a selections of English Heritage properties, often as recorded and related in interviews with site staff.
