In their lovely Cotswolds village, Janet and Susan are known simply as the girls. Partners in love and work, co-proprietors of a picturesque shop, they lead an enviably peaceful life.

But when a moment of surprising passion disrupts the equilibrium of their world, the girls lives take a deeply unsettling turn.

First comes motherhood. Then comes murder.

Part-dark comedy, part-crime thriller, part-cosy love story, John Bowens The Girls is a novel like none other. Told with warmth and affection, yet laced with dark unease, 'the girls' will ensure you never look on Middle England quite so quaintly again.

Startlingly offbeat Gore Vidal

Absolutely wicked Armistead Maupin

[ For] those who feel Barbara Pym-ish on some days and Stephen King-ish on others . . . The Girls charms us as only certain tales of village life can Washington Post

Arvustused

[ A] well-crafted novel of murder and mystery . . . Bowens handling of the novels conclusionelegiac, compassionate and redemptiveis satisfying; his true subject becomes the nature of friendship * The New York Times Book Review * This is a charming little novel about two women who share a home, a garden, and later, a baby. What happens when the accidental father returns? Fans of Patricia Highsmith and Edward Gorey (whose delightful designs adorn the cover) should like The Girls * San Francisco Bay Times * Deadpan, sly, and threatening . . . Im sure Im not the only reader who thought of this book as his own secret, to be recommended only to the most unusual of friends, but now its back in the world and will hopefully garner the cult audience it deserves * Slate *

John Bowen (19242019) was born in what was then Calcutta, India, before being sent to England at the age of four to be reared by an uncle and aunt. He worked in journalism and advertising while publishing his first novels, including the apocalyptic After the Rain, then began a successful career writing for the stage and for television, including the much-lauded folk-horror Play for Today Robin Redbreast (1970).
