It's a rainy day in Manchester and Gloria's worst birthday ever when the gramophone arrives from Jamaica. The strains of an old jazz 78 transport Gloria to 1920s Harlem to meet Willy Ray and his jazz singer mother. She becomes a dancer and has many adventures in Harlem before returning home.
