This edited collection honors the career of Stephen Murray, Lisa and Bernard Selz Professor Emeritus of Medieval Art History at Columbia University, an authority on the history of Gothic architecture whose prolific research, teaching, and public engagement have challenged scholars to think about the mutually constitutive relationship between space and society, in contexts ranging from the medieval city to the modern classroom. Inspired by Murrays innovative work on spatiality as an exercise, an experience, and even an intellectual framework, the volumes two dozen contributorsspecialists active in the fields of art history, architectural history, archaeology, literary studies, and museum studiesengage the subject of Gothic space from multiple perspectives.
