This book is a collection of chapters which guide the readers to achieve the growth of the large crystals of CVD diamonds for variety of applications including gems. The book is written at a level which addresses both the expert level as well as technical level needed for someone interested in setting up a laboratory or a manufacturing facility for CVD diamond. Currently these facilities are being setup almost on a daily basis in India and China. A history of the evolution of the CVD diamond technologies is presented initially, and later chapters describe the details of the chambers, substrate stage, color of CVD diamonds, various industrial applications and their requirements. One of the most important topics covered is the problems or difficulties encountered during the growth of large CVD diamond crystals and their resolutions. A summary of other crystalline materials used as "diamond simulant" is also discussed in short and fingerprints are pointed out which can be used to identify the CVD origin of the diamonds.
Professor Devi Shanker Misra began his work on carbon and diamond materials in the Physics Department at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, India, where he established a renowned research group with funding from the Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India. After 20 years at IIT Bombay, he moved to Singapore as the Chief Technology Officer of IIa Technologies. There, he developed processes that made IIa a leading supplier of CVD diamonds. The processes developed by him are still used by CVD diamond producers across India. During his 15 years at IIa, he advanced growth processes for both gem-quality diamonds and scientific products like anvils and detectors. Professor Misra earned global recognition for his work in CVD single crystal diamonds, collaborating with universities in Europe and the USA. He holds a PhD from IIT Kanpur, India, and has guided 13 PhD students. With 125 technical publications, he remains active in CVD diamond research, focusing on developing four-inch single crystal diamond wafers.
