Hidden Figures of the South West showcases over 150 impactful portraits, honouring individuals in under-recognised professions whose skills and contributions risk fading into obscurity. These professions include conservationists, traditional artisans, artists, and more.

With camera in hand, photographer Caitlin Pharoah has climbed barnacle-covered rocks to witness seaweed harvesters at work, explored the complex ecosystems of mushroom farms, and listened to the quiet wisdom of those preserving ancient crafts.

Each 'Hidden Figure' has written the narrative that accompanies their portrait. The images and words reveal the human stories behind the professions, providing a layered understanding of lives often overlooked.

Each year, skills and knowledge passed down through millennia disappear before they can be retained for the future. Together, we can change the ending of this story.

Promotion for Hidden Figures of the South West remains active and ongoing, with a continued programme of exhibitions, author talks, book events, and community engagement across the region. These activities are complemented by regular Hidden Figure Fayres, which bring together featured makers for demonstrations, workshops, and conversations that connect audiences directly with traditional skills and local craft.

At the same time, Hidden Figures of Yorkshire & the Humber is now underway, with new photography in progress and early talks and events helping to build awareness of the next chapter of the project. Together, these promotional activities keep the series visible, expand its audience, and strengthen community connections around heritage, craft, and under-recognised professions.
Fueled by an unhealthy tea addiction and entrepreneurial determination, I have spent over ten years in the photographic industry and hold various qualifications in the field.

I am a Devon-based Photographer who founded Hummingbirds Photography in 2018. In 2021, I graduated with a First Class Honours Degree in Film, Media and Photography (Ent) from the University of Leeds. I am also an Enterprise Scholar.

I developed a passion for highlighting those who often feel overlooked. Through research and conversations within my community, I initiated the project Hidden Figures of the South West to shine a light on these unsung individuals through photography.

Now that these Hidden Figures have been brought into the spotlight, I am determined to ensure they do not fade back into obscurity.
