Papers from the June 2010 High Performance Computing Workshop, held in Cetraro, Italy, focus on the use of large parallel systems. A section on current and future scenarios offers a history of the grid and discusses topics such as the petaflop-era in Europe and the role of co-design in exascale computing. The section on grids and clouds looks at areas such as integrating service and desktop grids at middleware and application level, crosscloud computing, high performance computing as a service, and desktop clouds. The section devoted to technologies and systems presents work on areas including database queries on CPU and GPU, an operating system strategy for general-purpose parallel computing on many-core architectures, and component-oriented approaches for software development in the extreme-scale computing era. The book's final section describes applications in areas such as service-oriented data analysis in distributed computing systems, the scalability of real-time online interactive applications on multiple servers and clouds, and distributed storage and parallel processing in large-scale wireless sensor networks. The book is illustrated with b&w screen shots and process diagrams. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
